Why LED?

We hear about LED lights everywhere these days. They are advertised as the best kind of lighting for caravans and automobiles. Environmentalists say they are one of the answers to our greenhouse emissions problem. Interior decorators see them as the most stylish lighting solution for the home. With all of the praise LED lighting gets, we are naturally inclined to look into it further. Then we read about the benefits of 12v LED lights and wonder what that means. What are 12v LED lights and what is all the fuss about?

What Are 12v LED Lights?

When LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting first became available, it was primarily used for very low power needs. The small size of a diode made it ideal for applications such as the tiny red lights that indicate that a power drill, for instance, was plugged in. As the technology improved, they were found to be ideal for applications where battery and solar power was used because they emitted more light per volt of electricity than any other form of lighting. 12 volt LED lights, for example, are capable of producing as much light as a 40 watt standard lightbulb.

Advantages of 12v LED Lights

While 12v LED lights are still primarily used in automobiles, caravans, boats and other applications that require battery power, they are increasingly being used in the home. Although more expensive than incandescent or fluorescent lighting, LED lights consume far less power. 12v LED lights consume only 3 watts of power. Contrast this with the 40 watts consumed by a 40w incandescent bulb and you can begin to see just how much you can save on your power bill and energy consumption if you simply switch to 12v LED lights wherever possible in the home.

Not only do LEDs consume less energy, they far outlast other forms of lighting. The 12v LED lights you use to illuminate your desk or display case will last for up to 10 years. How many incandescent or fluorescent lights would you go through in that period of time?

Yet another advantage to 12v LED lights is that they burn cool. In an enclosed space, such as a display case or refrigerated wine cabinet, the advantages of a cool burning light source are obvious. When used as ceiling lighting, these lights are the safest you can use, eliminating the dangers associated with hot ceiling lights around insulation and ceiling debris.

When Christmas time comes around, take advantage of LED lights and replace your old Xmas lights, indoors and out, with 12v LED lights. Light emitting diodes have the unique ability to cross the spectrum of light emissions, enabling them to emit coloured light. Christmas tree lights are an example of this, but a range of other colourful uses have been found for them as well, including the amazing LED splashbacks that are becoming so popular.

12v LED lights are continually being improved and new applications for them are being found every day. Learn more about LED lights in general and stay informed. LED is the future of lighting. Before you know it, people will be asking, “What’s a 40 watt lightbulb?” instead of “What are 12v LED lights?”
